Lesson number_______.              Date:________

 Title: Introduction to Phonics

Objective: To introduce nursery students to phonics, including the sounds of the alphabet, and basic letter recognition.

Materials:

  • Flashcards with the letters of the alphabet
  • Objects or pictures with names that begin with each letter of the alphabet (e.g., "a" for "apple," "b" for "ball," etc.)
  • A whiteboard or chalkboard
  • Writing utensils (e.g., markers, chalk)

Introduction (5 minutes):

  • Greet the students and introduce yourself.
  • Show the students the flashcards with the letters of the alphabet and review the names of each letter.
  • Explain that you will be teaching them about phonics, which is the way we use sounds to read and write words.

Body (15-20 minutes):

  • Start with a few letters, such as "a," "b," and "c."
  • Show the corresponding object or picture for each letter (e.g., an apple for "a," a ball for "b," a cat for "c") and have the students say the name of the object/picture and the sound that the letter makes.
  • Write the letter on the board and have the students practice writing it in the air with their fingers.
  • Repeat this process for each letter you have chosen to teach.

Conclusion (5 minutes):

  • Review the letters and sounds that were taught in the lesson.
  • Encourage the students to practice writing the letters and saying the sounds at home.

Assessment:

  • Observe the students as they participate in the activities and assess their understanding of the letters and sounds that were taught.
  • You can also provide them with worksheets to practice writing the letters and identifying the objects/pictures that start with each letter.

Note: Keep in mind that nursery students have a short attention span, so keep the activities short and engaging to keep them interested. You can also use songs and games to make the lesson more fun and interactive.

Steps to Teach English language to Nursery students

Teaching English to nursery class students who have a mother tongue that is not English can be challenging, but with the right approach, it can be a rewarding experience. Here are some steps you can take to teach English to nursery class students:

  1. Introduce the English language: Start by introducing the English language to your students. You can begin by teaching basic English words and phrases that are commonly used in everyday situations.

  2. Use visuals and props: Children learn best when they can see and touch things. Therefore, use visuals and props such as pictures, flashcards, and toys to help your students understand and remember the words and phrases you are teaching.

  3. Speak slowly and clearly: When teaching English to non-native speakers, it is important to speak slowly and clearly. Use simple sentences and avoid using complex vocabulary.

  4. Use songs and rhymes: Children love music, so using songs and rhymes is an effective way to teach English. Choose catchy tunes and easy-to-remember lyrics that your students can sing along with.

  5. Play games: Games are a fun and engaging way to teach English. Use games such as memory matching, word bingo, and Simon Says to reinforce the English words and phrases you are teaching.

  6. Encourage interaction: Encourage your students to interact with you and with each other in English. Encourage them to ask questions and participate in activities.

  7. Create a positive learning environment: Finally, create a positive learning environment that is conducive to learning. Praise your students for their efforts and achievements, and create a sense of community in the classroom.
